Virginia Museum of Transportation
Located down the tracks from downtown Roanoke, the Virginia Museum of Transportation offers a timeline of locomotive and automotive history.
The train yard gives visitors the opportunity to climb aboard and see how people traveled in railcars. The interior of the President One car is an impressive preservation of the way the more elite trains looked and felt. There's plenty to do between checking out the Studebaker wagon or the recreation of Jeff Gordon's 1993 Dupont Chevrolet Monte Carlo racing car.
For those more interested in the locomotive world, a working, O gauge train travels through a layout with mountain tunnels and trackside communities. There is even a section dedicated to the traveling circus.
Throughout the museum, vintage road signs and license plates adorn the exposed brick walls. The museum has a gallery of black-and-white train photos by former Roanoke Mayor Nelson Harris. The photos depict life on the railway and the people who worked on the trains.
There is also a small playground for children outside the museum.
Train and automotive memorabilia are available for purchase in the museum gift shop.
